Tommy Cox, CTICS(SS): Served active duty 1960-79. Full name:
George Thomas Cox.
Address: 3 Farrell Street, Caribou, Maine 04736. Served in Gitmo during Cuban
Missile Crisis, Far East, out of Japan, during Vietnam War. Rode submarines
67-78 in PAC and LANT as follows: USS Barbel (SS-580), USS Scamp (SSN-588), USS
Guardfish (SSN-612), USS Lapon (SSN-661), USS Sea Devil (SSN-664), USS
Hammerhead (SSN-663), USS Greenling (SSN-614), USS Bergall (SSN-667), USS
Trepang (SSN-674), USS Seawolf (SSN-575), and USS Parche (SSN-683), total of 16
missions. Qualified aboard Lapon June 69 under command of Capt. Whitey Mack.
Attended Tidewater Community College 72-73 under ADCOP program and finished BA
degree at University of Maryland Dec. 75. Wrote, recorded, and published record
album entitled TAKE HER DEEP in 1978. Song collection now on Compact Disk (CD).
Received mention in national best seller BLIND MAN'S BLUFF by Sherry Sontag and
Christopher Drew and contributed to the name of the book from a line in song
"Ballad of Whitey Mack."
Transferred to Fleet Reserve with 20 years Oct. 79 and moved to New London,
Connecticut area and worked for A&T Technical Services, Inc., 79-83. Formed
country-rock band and performed mostly at Norm's Lounge on Bridge Street In
Groton. Also played at the EM and CPO Clubs on Sub Base. Song "Big Black
Submarine" from album was huge local hit at WCTY-FM radio from Norwich, CT.
Moved to hometown of Caribou, Maine in May 83 to work for State of Maine in
child support law enforcement. Will retire again, probably, in 2002.
Hobbies include hunting, fishing, competition shooting, fly tying, ammo
reloading, camping, and singing around campfires. Exceptionally proud of three
wonderful children and six
grandchildren. Have son who is a submarine qualified Nuke, ET1(SS). Member of
following organizations: USSVI (Thresher Base, NH), VFW, American Legion, FRA,
U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Assoc., NRA, TKE Fraternity, etc.
